Roslyn Washington

Roslyn is located 80 miles east of Seattle, near Interstate 90, in central Washington. The population in 2012 was 900. Roslyn was a coal-mining town incorporated in 1886. The extensive coal fields in the area fueled the Northern Pacific Railroad’s trains during construction and early operation of a direct rail line through the Cascade Mountains.

Coal Industry

Coal was found in the area in 1883. Many men came from various mining regions of the United State to work in the mines. English, Italian and Slavic immigrants made up a significant part of the town’s early residents. An 1888 strike prompted the Northern Pacific Coal Company to recruit more than 300 African-American miners from eastern states bringing them and their families to Roslyn. Many of the original families continue to make Roslyn their home and many of today’s residents are descendants of the immigrant miners. Diesel fuel slowly began replacing coal-fired steam trains and the mines began to shut down in the 1920’s. The last mine closed in 1963.

Much of the growth centered around the mining industry. Many buildings and homes were built to support the miners and their families. The town was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1978. The railroad tracks have been replaced by the Coal Mines Trail. Much of the modern economy is centered around recreation and tourism. Annual festivals like the Manly Man Festival, Pioneer Days Picnic and a Mining Festival are hosted in here.
